Nearly 2 million vehicles have returned to U.S. roads after airbag deployments in the last two years, raising concerns over counterfeit airbags, according to CARFAX.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warns that these counterfeit airbags can be deadly, with three deaths and two severe injuries reported in the past nine months.
States with the highest numbers of vehicles with recent airbag deployments include Texas (206,000), Florida (106,000), and North Carolina (100,000). Consumers are urged to check Vehicle History Reports on CARFAX.com to verify airbag status and have any replacements inspected by a trusted mechanic.
“NHTSA advises ensuring vehicles have genuine airbag inflators to prevent critical injuries in crashes,” stated the agency. For more information, visit CARFAX.
