The 2024 Hankook Tire Gauge Index of American attitudes toward electric vehicles (EVs), car technology, and maintenance confidence found that 20% of consumers plan to buy or lease an EV within the next year, a significant increase from 8% in 2022.

Additionally, Millennials and Gen X are leading the EV interest surge, with 36% and 35% considering future EV purchases.

The Hankook Gauge Index also reveals evolving motivations for EV adoption. While fuel savings was once the primary driver, its importance has declined from 58% in 2022 to 36% in 2024. Environmental concerns (18%) and interest in new vehicle technology (10%) are now gaining traction among consumers as key factors.

Additionally, the survey highlights generational differences in driving behavior, with Gen Z drivers most likely to experience road rage (26%) compared to Boomers (13%). This shift, coupled with a rise in drivers viewing themselves as “thoughtful and responsible” dropping from 65% in 2014 to 57% in 2024, suggests that changing road conditions and attitudes may impact overall driving experiences.
