Mitchell International reports a 45% increase in U.S. battery electric vehicle (BEV) collision claims and a 39% rise in Canada, despite slowing BEV sales in 2024.
According to Mitchell’s Q2 2024 Plugged-In: EV Collision Insights report, BEV repair costs remain significantly higher than those for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, averaging $5,753 in the U.S. compared to $4,806 for ICE repairs.
Hybrid vehicle claims have increased more gradually, with mild hybrids showing similar repair costs to gasoline-powered vehicles. Notably, BEVs require fewer frame labor operations but involve more mechanical labor hours.
OEM parts are used 89% of the time in BEV repairs, compared to 65% for ICE vehicles. As BEV complexity impacts claim costs and repair operations, the collision repair industry faces new challenges. Download the full report on Mitchell’s website.
