The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has named the addition of two professionals to its Board of Directors:
- Brett Merritt – President, Engine Business, Cummins Inc., Columbus, Indiana.
- Harold Sumerford, Jr. – Chief Executive Officer, J&M Tank Lines, Inc., Birmingham, Alabama.
These appointments were made by ATRI Chairman of the Board, Derek Leathers, who is also Chairman and CEO of Werner Enterprises.
Here is a brief look at their backgrounds.
Brett Merritt joined Cummins Inc. in 2009 and has played a pivotal role in the growth of its on-highway business, increasing the engine output from 800,000 in 2012 to 1.2 million last year. Merritt has over 26 years of experience in the automotive and commercial vehicle industry, including more than 15 years at Cummins. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Harold Sumerford, Jr. has been with J&M Tank Lines since 1976, taking on the role of CEO in 2002. Under his leadership, J&M has expanded to 552 employees, 11 terminals, 415 tractors, and 720 tankers. Sumerford has been actively involved in numerous industry associations, including the National Tank Truck Carriers and the American Trucking Associations. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Georgia State University.
